There are multiple ways to meet new people in the Holland depending on your situation and preferences. I would love to share mine:
- if you study: be proactive and talk to your classmates. Yes, there is a stereotype that Holland people are reserved and attached to their own families or inner circles of friends. Regardless of that, they will positively respond if you show interest first.
- if you work: again, be proactive! The Holland Peoples are generally interested in other cultures and like sharing their own experiences. Your new Dutch colleague most likely will not invite you to his house immediately, but you can enjoy a few drinks on Friday’s evening at a local restaurant. Who knows, maybe you have just initiated a new friendship that lasts!
- install couch surfing app: you can hang out with other foreigners or locals. Great if you are here short term and want to know the city. If you prefer rather befriending new people than just hanging out, the above mentioned strategies work better long-term.
- go to local events: this is probably a self-explanatory idea. Find the ones happening nearby or just whatever you like. If you are open enough, you will meet new people.
- engage yourself in other activities: let it be language classes, sports at a local club, knitting or local book lovers meet up in your neighborhood. You will find your way if you genuinely approach others with good intentions.
In a nutshell, just be proactive! Dutch people are friendly, open-minded, educated and curious. They will never refuse a nice chat with a like-minded person. This country is also full of foreigners, so in case you feel the need to talk to someone swimming in the same boat, you have plenty of options.
Best of luck
